Omani-French seminar on contemporary trends of museography

The Ministry of Heritage and Culture organised in collaboration with the French Embassy a 3 days seminar on “Contemporary trends of Museography” from the 5th to the 7th February 2011 at the Qurum Cultural Club. This seminar occurred in the framework of joint cooperation between the two countries.

H.E.Salem bin Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture for Heritage, said that the organisation of this seminar marks a transition in the museum sector in the Sultanate of Oman. The Ministry ensures the organisation of such training sessions involving experts in order to strenghten the national human resources and enable them to take responsibility for the management of this major sector. HE. expressed his thanks and appreciation to the French Embassy for its cooperation in organizing this seminar with the support of specialized institutions of France.

Moreover, His Excellency Malika Berak, Ambassador of France, said : "It’s an honour for France to collaborate with the Ministry of Heritage and Culture in the museum field. By its rich heritage France has developed tools, institutions and internationally recognized expertise in terms of protection and promotion. This seminar is an important opportunity to mobilize our French actors to share their experiences with our Omani partners. I would like to thank all participants, and particularly the Directorate of Museums of France’s of the Ministry of Culture and Information and the National Heritage Institute.”

Leading experts in the field of museography and its contemporary trends attended this conference as well as establishments known worldwide as the French Ministry of Culture and Information and the National Heritage Institute. Various presentations were delivered by French and Omani speakers. The conference sessions began with a general introduction on museums of Omani Ministry of Heritage and Culture and were followed by an overview of public policy in favor of museums in France.

Then roundtables covered various topics such as assessment planning museum programs, the management of cultural sites and a presentation on distinguished museums designed by great French architects. The seminar concluded with a presentation of the training offer for foreign executives in the field of museography.

Have taken part in this symposium a number of museums of the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, Diwan of Royal Court (Muscat Gate Museum), the Municipality of Muscat (Bait Al Baranda). Also the Armed Forces Museum, the Museum of Saidia School, Bait Al Zubair, Ghalia Museum of Modern Art and Sultan Qaboos University (college of Education).
